Former Pirates infielder, Phil Garner, passed away Saturday night in Texas at 76 years old.
Garner spent five of his 16 Major League seasons with the Pirates from 1977 to 1981 helping the Bucs win the World Series in 1979.
After playing for the Pirates, Garner managed the Brewers, Tigers, and Astros.
Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting said in a statement, "He will be remembered not only for the grit, passion, and heart he brought to the game, but also for the way he carried himself as a devoted family man and respected member of the baseball community."
Garner is survived by his wife Carol, his sons, his daughter, and 6 grandchildren.
Known as “Scrap-Iron”, Garner was a .260 lifetime hitter with 109 home runs and 738 RBI.
