Andrew Fillipponi is hoping Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t do well this year, so the Steelers can go after Aaron Rodgers in 2022.
“If he deep sixes himself this year and proves to the Steelers and everyone else that it’s over, then they’ll really go after Aaron Rodgers,” said Poni.
NFL Insider John Clayton told the PM Team on Tuesday that if Roethlisberger doesn’t return in 2022 then the Steelers to strongly consider getting Rodgers.
Clayton believes that would take a first round draft pick along with a conditional second rounder.
"You've seen that Kevin Colbert has been a little bit more aggressive in trading to get the players that he wants. He traded up to 10 to get Devin Bush, he made the trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick."
But any chance of that happening goes out the window if Roethlisberger has decent to good year and gets the close or into the playoffs.
“I hope that up top, Kevin Colbert and the front office of the Steelers more than anything else, what they are doing this very second is thinking to themselves ‘what do we as an organization need to do in 2021 to put ourselves in the best position possible to acquire Aaron Rodgers’”, said Poni.
If the Steelers do something like go 9-8 with a Wild Card loss, they will be closer to getting Roethlisberger to come back and play at 40-years-old than they would be from winning a seventh championship.
The Steelers have the draft capital and cap space to bring AR12 to the 412, it just depends on if Big Ben plans to stick around or not.
