PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Having played the position as a starting quarterback and as a back-up, former Pitt QB Pat Bostick said the signing of Mitch Trubisky to an extension is critical. Steelers made that news official on Friday, agreeing to a new three-year contract.
Bostick said the handoff last year was a little bit clunky from Trubisky to Kenny Pickett, but a young quarterback needs a veteran with his head on straight--someone to push ideas off of, to learn from and someone Pickett respects.
"I think the signing of Trubisky is common sense," Bostick told The Fan Morning Show. "He's a proven veteran with a bunch of starts and he's probably the most experienced backup in the AFC North. Kenny missed a couple of games last year with the same injury, you got to be careful and have an insurance policy. The most important thing is that Kenny gets along with him."
He also plays a similar style to Pickett, which makes the transition between the two good on the field. Bostick said heading into his seventh year in the NFL, Trubisky has done good things in the league. He believes it's the best situation for the former North Carolina star at this point in his career.
Trubisky started five games for the Steelers in 2022, playing in seven with a 65% completion, 1,252 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. Maybe as telling of what the team thinks about Trubisky, he was voted a team captain last year.
He has completed 64.2% for 11,904 yards and 68 TDs in his career. Trubisky has rushed for 1,119 yards on 222 carries and 11 TDs. Steelers will have their same three quarterbacks as the start of last year, although the order is a big different.
