Andrew Fillipponi says unless the Steelers make a big splash in the draft or Aaron Rodgers gets a lot of things in his personal life cleared up, it’s going to be Mason Rudolph as the starting quarterback in 2025.
The biggest takeaway from the free agent quarterback’s first public comments since free agency began is that he’s seriously considering stepping away from football.
Rodgers told McAfee that he has a lot of things going on in his personal life.
“I’m in a different phase of my life, I’m 41-years-old, I’m in a serious relationship, I have off the field stuff going on that requires my attention,” Rodgers said on McAfee’s show.
After listening to Rodgers, Poni thinks he’s a guy that sounds very far away from deciding about his football future and joining the Steelers.
“It’s very, very far from a done deal,” said Poni. “Football if very low on the list of priorities for Aaron Rodgers right now.”
Rodgers said that he isn’t thinking about football much right now, “It’s a small percentage.”
“He sounded like a guy who needs a lot of things to happen in order for him to shift his attention from what's going on in his personal life to football,” Poni.
If he doesn't come back, it looks like the keys of the offense will likely go to Rudolph.
“One of the biggest winners today, in my opinion, is Mason Rudolph,” said Poni. “He’s in the driver’s seat to be the Steelers starting quarterback. I’m not opposed to that, but I really didn’t think a week before draft night I’d be saying that.”
