Kenny Pickett has made a believer out of his predecessor at quarterback.
Retired QB Ben Roethlisberger said on his Footbahlin podcast, “I severely, in my opinion, underestimated Kenny.”
Roethlisberger says he didn’t know what to expect with Pickett since it’s his first year.
Even though he saw his success at Pitt, Roethlisberger still wasn’t sure but now, “I think he throws the ball better than I thought, he runs way better than I thought . . . his decision-making is really, really good, his leadership, his toughness, just enough of an edge to him it looks like.”
Even though Roethlisberger didn’t vocalize his expectations for Pickett that much, he still said sorry.
“I apologize, not that I made this like vocal to anybody else, but in my own head . . . Kenny, keep doing what you’re doing because you’re leading this team and becoming the guy they were hoping you would be and I think the sky’s the limit for him,” said Roethlisberger.
Big Ben added that of course you’ll need to see how he progresses in year two and three, but that Pickett has exceeded his expectations by far.
Roethlisberger pointed to Pickett’s back-to-back last drive touchdowns to win two in a row.
He also pointed out his expectations for Pickett weren’t low and it wasn’t out of jealousy, he just didn’t see him become the quarterback he has developed into.
