A lot is unknown about how the Steelers roster will look after the draft, but one thing is for sure, backup quarterback Mason Rudolph won't be back in Pittsburgh in 2023.
Well, not so fast.
According to Tribune Review reporter Tim Benz, Rudolph might be open to staying in Pittsburgh, if certain things happen.
A source tells Benz that while Rudolph's focus is signing elsewhere, he wouldn't "close the door unnecessarily" on rejoining Pittsburgh.
For that to happen, the Steelers would likely have to cut or trade fellow quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
The Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac said in his most recent chat that Trubisky could possibly be traded for a 3rd or 4th round draft pick.
Rudolph has a career 5-4-1 record in the NFL with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Rudolph only got a helmet in one game in 2022 and did not see any playing time.
Wherever he does go, he'll most certainly be a backup. If Trubisky is gone, maybe Rudolph does re-sign with a team he is familiar with.
Rudolph is currently an unrestricted free agent.
Trubisky is set to make $8 million in 2023 and deliver a cap hit of $10.6 million.
Andrew Fillipponi highlighted the Trubisky discussion on The PM Team Wednesday, saying saving $4-5 million could be the difference between keeping Cam Sutton or brining in a left tackle and linebacker, "You save money where you can in a cap sport, Mitch Trubisky is a luxury at this point."
