PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He fits into the mold of a 30-something young offensive coach. He also falls into the long list of coaches who previously worked with Mike McCarthy.

What to know about Scott Tolzien as ESPN reports the New Orleans quarterbacks coach is talking to the Steelers about being the offensive coordinator.

The Illinois native had only two Power Four offers out of high school and went with former Pitt head coach Paul Chryst at Wisconsin. He would play in the NFL working with Greg Roman as his offensive coordinator for two seasons in San Francisco. Tolzien was a third-stringer and then back-up for three years with McCarthy in Green Bay and had assistants Tom Clements, Alex Van Pelt, Ben McAdoo and Luke Getsy. He finished is playing career with Indianapolis as Andrew Luck and Jacoby Brissett’s backup where current Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer was the quarterbacks coach.

McCarthy gave him his first coaching job with the Cowboys in 2020 where he stayed for the entirety of McCarthy’s time in Dallas, serving as the quarterbacks coach the last two years.

Last season, Tolzien was the quarterbacks coach in New Orleans working under head coach, and former Dallas assistant, Kellen Moore along with offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier.

An interesting note, Nussmeier’s son, Garrett, was the starting quarterback at LSU and will be in the NFL Draft this year.
