PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Back from a long weekend following the loss, Steelers coaches addressed the team about a big talking point from Thursday night.
Receiver James Washington confirmed on Monday, there were discussions about receiver Chase Claypool signaling for a first down with just seconds left. As he made the first down point, the clock was ticking with no timeouts left. Teammate Trai Turner came over quickly to grab the ball to set it down to be place which wasted more time. It cost the team another opportunity for an end zone shot to potentially tie the game.
"Coaches talked to us about it," Washington said. "It's kind of one of those common-sense deals, but when you are in the moment I guess guys make mistakes and do things. It was a costly deal for us, but at the end of the day we are still a team."
"I think he lost track of what was going on with the game. As far as that, it was a mistake on his part. I'm sure he owns up to it and he realizes it. It's one of those things we have to move forward from and regroup as a team."
No huddle
Washington is a fan of the no huddle believing the success there starts with being able to catch teams in the right personnel and then be able to keep that advantage for a series of plays.
"Usually when we let Ben just kind of flow with the flow of the game he usually dials up stuff that works and gets us downfield," Washington said. "He usually gets us a touchdown or what we need. I like the fact that we do that a little, for sure."
Three quarter issues
In the last four games combined, the Steelers trailed heading into the fourth quarter 100-23. It's crazy that they won one of these games and nearly won two others.
"We just have to choose our strikes at the right time," Washington said. "I feel like we're calling good plays. It's just a timing thing for us."
While Washington feels like they are calling good plays, he does think they are more successful when it's Ben making those decisions.
"We will go no-huddle and we will usually get a spark and somebody will make a play down field," Washington said. "That's really all we need, is just that one play to pop off and we're good from there."
