PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – If you think the coaches and teammates are concerned about TJ Watt missing the first day and likely the entirety of minicamp, that’s not the feeling on Tuesday, the start of the three-day mandatory sessions.
Could some of that just an organization wanting to put a positive spin, likely. But it’s not the first time they’ve dealt with contract issues and it’s the second time for Watt.
“We are going to keep preparing and moving ahead,” said Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. “We expect him back at some point. He’ll get caught up fast. He’ll be in great shape like he always is. I think it’s a great opportunity for young guys to get more reps and see what they can do on good-on-good competition.”
Austin said not only do they get more reps against the first-teamers, but they get to work in different situations. Those opportunities they wouldn’t have necessarily had otherwise. Ultimately it should help all of those behind Watt grow.
“It’s such a good opportunity for the other guys to be able to put their work on display and show all they’ve been working on in the offseason,” said Steelers outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin. He added he’s not concerned about Watt, when he joins them, he will be ready.
Nick Herbig is going into his third year and says obviously it’s an advantage to have Watt for these three days, but he’s excited to see what he can do playing with the starters. He said he always prepares like he is a starter. He has the talent to be a starter and if only for this time Watt is out, he will be one.
“It’s nothing new,” Herbig said. “Obviously would love to have him here, that’s my guy. Will always be my guy. He’s a heartbeat of the team. Whatever happens, happens.”
Austin said Watt is just handling his business. They’ve touched base a few times this offseason, but those conversations have been more personal than professional. He said when Watt shows up, he will be ready to go.
