In a sudden and somewhat shocking move, the Steelers have released All-Pro guard David DeCastro.
"David was without a doubt one of the premier offensive linemen during his time with us," said General Manager and Vice President Kevin Colbert said in a statement on Steelers.com. "He helped us win a lot of football games, but it was David's consistency, reliability and professionalism that stood out more than anything else. We wish him the best moving forward in his career."
DeCastro we taken in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Steelers with the 24th pick out of Stanford.
The 31-year-old DeCastro is a six-time Pro Bowler and was named an All-Pro twice.
He has started in 124 games of the 125 he has played in during his nine-year career in Pittsburgh.
DeCastro was considered a big piece of the 2021 offensive lineman puzzle, but his lack of participation in mini-camp and injury struggles last season were concerning.
The move also gives the Steelers $8.7 million in cap space instantly.
While we don’t know exactly why DeCastro was released, it does seem likely that an injury is behind the move.
