LATROBE, PA (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers added a former Ravens draft pick who played six years and 96 games for Baltimore on Friday. Safety Chuck Clark made a quick appearance in his first practice with the Steelers.

The 30-year-old was on the field briefly as practice was cut short due to the threat of severe weather.

“I’m just highly familiar with his intangibles,” said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. “He’s got a really good relationship with the game. He’s a hard worker. He’s a really good communicator. His football character comes highly recommended.”

Clark played and started 12 games with the Jets last year with 69 tackles playing 88% of the snaps as he returned from missing 2023 with a torn ACL. The sixth-round pick had a career-high 101 tackles (61 solo) with the Ravens as a strong safety in 2022 and had a career-high 12 passes defensed in 2021 also at strong safety. He played 100% of the defensive snaps for Baltimore from 2020 to 2022.

Tomlin said they will see over the next few days where his skillset really fits with the defense. He has played mostly strong safety in his career, exclusively the last four years, but did play a year at free safety. He joins a safety group without its leader as Minkah Fitzpatrick was traded with DeShon Elliott and Juan Thornhill as the most experienced players.

As for him being a former Raven joining the Steelers, like Patrick Queen and a few others over the years. He has more tackles, 58, against the Steelers than any other team in his career.

“I just view players as familiar or unfamiliar,” Tomlin said. “I could care less about who they played for. Because he played for the Ravens, I’m familiar with him. I think that’s the thing that captures my attention more than anything, the familiarity component, less so about who he played for.”

Clark arrived late to practice and spent some time greeting fans as he went down the steps from the gym to the fields at St. Vincent College Friday afternoon.
