Steelers take advantage of unexpected bye week, get healthy

WR Diontae Johnson out of concussion protocol

The Steelers bye week came earlier than expected after a coronavirus outbreak in the Tennessee Titans organization last week, and coach Mike Tomlin says they took advantage of the time off.

During his weekly press conference, Tomlin said wide receiver Diontae Johnson is out of concussion protocol and is expected to be a full participant.

Tomlin says they were see where full back Derek Watt (Hamstring) and safety/linebacker (foot) are in their progress on Wednesday and if they are able to practice.

Tomlin says since they didn't know it was going to be a bye week, they were able to begin planning for Tennessee and will "file" the preparation away until they get ready to play the Titans again on October 25.

"We got a lot of good, schematic work done at the top of the week in preparation for what we thought was a Tennessee Titans game," said Tomlin.

The Steelers were also able to get in a "bonus day" on Monday to begin preparations for Monday.

The CBA says that players must get four days off for a bye week, but were given permission to keep their regular schedule, since the team was already at practice on Thursday when they found out the game would not be played.
