After a rough start to the season, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has turned it around, making almost every tackle possible, while also becoming somewhat of a de-facto inside linebacker because of the struggling play of Devin Bush and company.
The 2022 season is the last year of Fitzpatrick's contract and he is scheduled to make $10.6 million.
The Steelers have a big decision coming up with re-signing Fitzpatrick. As Pro Football Focus' Brad Spielberger points out, extending him would likely take making him the highest paid safety in football.
Morning Show co-host Colin Dunlap says that while it might not be ideal, the Steelers will need to overpay Fitzpatrick.
"The best business is probably, even if you feel it's an overpay, is overpaying for Minkah Fitzpatrick," said Dunlap. "You're probably going to be hamstrung in that he's going to be able to name is own price because you don't want to run the risk of being caught at safety with somebody that can't play."
While the salary cap is expected to go up significantly the Steelers already have a large chunk invested in their defense with T.J. Watt's mega deal and Cam Heyward's contract.
The bottom line is, while he isn't playing as well as he has in past seasons, he's still the Steelers best option in the backfield and still has the potential to be one of the best safeties in the league.
