INDIANAPOLIS (93.7 The Fan) – Day one of the NFL Combine Tuesday, Steelers general manager Omar Khan said he’s been in communication with Aaron Rodgers and has not set a deadline for Rodgers to decide about 2026, adding ‘I don’t foresee this going like it did last year’.
Khan wouldn’t say a decision has to be made before free agency (March 11). They would like to know as soon as they could.
“This isn’t going to go like last year,” Khan said, when the decision dragged into May.
Asked if it is was his desire to have Rodgers as the starting quarterback in 2026?
“It was a really good experience with Aaron and that option is still out there,” Khan said.
Rodgers went 10-6 in his first season with the Steelers missing a game-and-a-half due to a wrist injury. Overall, Rodgers completed 65.7% of his passes for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His quarterback rating was 94.8, highest since he led the NFL with Green Bay in 2021 at 111.9.
He went the last seven games without an interception winning five of the last seven including a 125.9 QB rating in the 28-15 win over Miami and leading a 26-24 win over Baltimore to get into the playoffs.
The 42-year-old struggled in the playoff game against Houston, 17-33 for 146 yards with an interception, averaging only 4.4 yards per attempt, lowest in a playoff game in his career.
Rodgers signed a one-year, $13.65 million contract including a $10 million signing bonus for last season.
Khan said they may have the next quarterback on the roster, specifically talking about Will Howard. They are excited to work with Howard.
“We certainly welcome Aaron back,” Khan said. “It was a really good experience with him. Really enjoyed getting to know him, it was great to have him around. The reality is we are all searching for that next guy, that 10-to-15-year guy.”
“I guess right now all options are on the table. It’s still early, it’s going to be fluid.”
