Tomlin to bring in officials to help Steelers reduce penalties

The Steelers were penalized 10 times for 89 yards on Sunday

Penalties may be down across the NFL so far this season, but the Steelers were heavily penalized during Sunday's win against the Denver Broncos.

The Steelers were penalized 10 times on Sunday for 89 yards. Several offensive drives were stalled and a punt return to the end zone was also called back.

On the defensive side, pass interference calls extended Bronco drives during the game.

"We were too highly penalized in the game and it hurt our efforts on both sides of the ball, it hurt our efforts in terms of possessing the ball on offense," said coach Mike Tomlin during his weekly press conference Tuesday.

To help correct that Tomlin is bringing in some refs to help reduce the amount of penalties the team is racking up.

"We're not only analyzing and opening talking about the penalties but we're working hard to rectify it, we intend to bring some officials to our practice work this week in an effort to make a point, an emphasis in that area.

Tomlin adds that the organization is in contact with the NFL league office to assure they are following the proper protocols for having outside officials at their practice site safely.

"The bottom line is we need to ratchet up our quality of play in that area and that's just a reasonable approach to take in terms of doing so," said Tomlin
