While Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and out-going general manager Kevin Colbert never show their cards ahead of the draft, but you can pick up some small bread crumbs of where they could be going.
The Steelers have been focusing heavily on quarterbacks this offseason, meeting with top candidates several times during pro day visits and in-person visits at their facility on the South Side as well.
Tomlin said during a pre-draft press conference on Monday at Heinz Field, they have met each of the seven quarterbacks they’re interested in at least two times in-person and someone from the organization has watched some of the quarterbacks play live at least seven times.
During a pre-draft press conference Monday at Heinz Field, Tomlin again gave another small clue that it could be a quarterback they take in the first round with pick #20.
“I enjoy the process of having a heightened urgency per a position, it seems like a year ago we really chopped up the running backs in a similar way,” said Tomlin.
Of course, the Steelers took running back Najee Harris in the first round.
Colbert added that the quarterback position is the most critical in all of football so have to make sure they get it right.
They also talked about how their signings in free agency won’t prevent them from adding to a position they signed during that time. Mainly quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
But even with the possibility of drafting a quarterback, Colbert said anything is possible.
“Could we add somebody? Yes. Could we start the season without adding somebody? Yes, so we’ll see how it all goes,” said Colbert.
Colbert and Tomlin also said they’ll be looking to trade up or trade down depending on how the first round starts to play out.
After months of speculation, the NFL Draft will finally begin this Thursday at 8p.m. and we’ll finally have some answers.
