Will Fields' role be 'Slash 2.0' in 2024?

Could the Steelers have a Slash 2.0 on their hands?

After the Steelers signed Russell Wilson, they shocked the football world by trading for Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

Head Coach Mike Tomlin has made it clear that Wilson is QB1 going into the 2024 season.

But what about Fields. Will he sit on the bench all season? Or, will the Steelers have plans for him.

Wilson spoke about Fields on Wednesday, telling Tim Benz of the Tribune Review that he’s a top talent in the NFL.

He sounds like he would be okay with Fields stepping in every now and then.

“He's dynamic,” Wilson told Benz, per NFL.com. “It's all about us winning. That's the focus. I think it would strike fear in some defenses, that's for sure."

Fields has said he is in Pittsburgh to play and would be open to a Kordell Stewart-type role with the Steelers.

The Fan’s Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn says Fields’ athleticism is on full display during OTAs.

“You feel he could play any position,” Hathhorn said during The Joe Show on Thursday.

He added that Fields and Wilson are both throwing the ball well so far.

Fan Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, with The Athletic, told The Fan Morning Show that he doesn’t think that the Steelers should throw Fields out there just to do it, but if they have a plan, then it could be successful for them.

Kaboly adds that with Fields the Steelers should be more focused on 2025 and less on 2024.

But, if Wilson plays well and forces the Steelers hand for a new contract, that would put Pittsburgh in an interesting and good situation.
