PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler said they need to make sure that he has the guys on the field Sunday that will help him win.
That could be using Marcus Allen and Mike Hilton in linebacker roles, using different sub-packages, but if they want a traditional middle linebacker, veteran Avery Williamson said he’s ready to help with Devin Bush, Vince Williams and Robert Spillane out.
“Thought I was ready the first week I got here, but I wasn’t anywhere near ready,” Williamson said Friday about learning the defense after the trade from the Jets early last month. “It took a little time. It’s definitely difficult. Thankfully the playbook isn’t too crazy. The coaches are definitely helping me and I feel a lot more comfortable.”
It’s happened fairly quickly for Williamson, he dressed his first game, but didn’t play. Had eight snaps against Jacksonville, 24 against Baltimore and 38 against Washington, many coming after the Spillane injury.
“Shoot, alright its like next man up,” Williamson said. “It’s a little bit hard to get that chemistry but the biggest thing is making sure the communication is good with whoever is out there, that we are just talking. As long as everybody knows everything, that’s the main key.”
It's not like the 28-year-old Williamson is new to the spotlight, he’s had three seasons of 100-plus tackles and 567 in his career. When he came over from the Jets he was hoping to work into more playing time, but not due to injury or COVID-19.
“It’s just the way things have gone this year, man I’m super excited and ready for this opportunity,” Williamson said. “I didn’t know how things would play out but it’s kind of crazy how the last week has spiraled. I’ve been a starter for a long time and ready to go out and prove myself again.”
“I feel like he’s done a great job since he’s been here of trying to learn as much as he possibly can and embracing the culture that we have here,” said linebacker TJ Watt. “I’m excited for him to get the opportunity to get a good amount of reps this weekend. He’s done a great job this week in practice of being more vocal.”
Williamson said he’s working with Allen as the converted safety hasn’t played NFL snaps at linebacker in the base defense, but they are talking a lot. Ulysees Gilbert was added off injured reserve, Williamson got some work with him at practice for the first time this week.
“I’m confident they are going to be good, whoever is there beside me,” Williamson said. “We will be solid.”
