Brian Flores’ bombshell lawsuit against the NFL has once again put eyes on the Rooney Rule.

The Rooney Rule was an attempt by late Steelers owner Dan Rooney to help get more Black candidates into the conversation when it comes to open coaching positions, thus leading to more coaches of color in the league.

Well nearly 20 years on, it’s clearly not working. Only one current head coach in the NFL is black and it’s Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

On Wednesday, former Steelers executive and Bills General Manager Doug Whaley (a man of color himself) explained how things can improve.

First: Owners need to feel it in their pocketbook and “turn off that cash flow spigot.”

Second: Having a group of potential coaches meet informally with owners so that both sides can get to know each other in an impersonal setting.
