ALHAMBRA, Calif. (KNX) – The Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California is celebrating its 40th anniversary with “Community Dance: Celebrating Unity” in Alhambra on Saturday.

The celebration will be held at the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, nearly four months after 11 people were killed in a mass shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park.

Connie Chung Joe. the CEO of Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern CA, said the event will be co-hosted with Brandon Tsay and his family.

On the night of the shooting, Tsay confronted and disarmed 72-year-old Huu Can Tran in the lobby of the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, which is run by Tsay’s family.

Chung Joe told KNX News they approached Brandon and his sister Brenda about the idea.

“They were super excited about the event,” she said. “They want to go back to recapturing the spark and the spirit, a ballroom dancing and bringing that love of that community back.”

She also said it’s about celebrating the local community.

“So we made sure it was free open to the public family-friendly,” she said. “There's gonna be kids, art, activities. It's gonna be participatory. So at the end, we're gonna have an open dance time so after you watch the ballroom dancers and some of the other performances, we're going to have it open and it's going to be uplifting and happy.

The event will kick off at 3:30 p.m. Chung Joe added that security will be present so that people feel safe.
