LOS ANGELES (KNX) – The James Webb Telescope is at it again. Earlier this week NASA released images from the new telescope showing Jupiter like we’ve never seen it before.
On this week’s edition of “All Over the Space,” Mike Murray of the Delta College Planetarium in Bay City told WWJ’s Erin Vee the photos are “surreal.”
“They now have finally released some excellent, processed images of the planet in infrared. And because you’re looking at infrared, it shows a lot more detail within the atmosphere,” Murray said.
Murray says the images look more like “incredible works of art” than actual photos.
The gas giant’s famous red spot actually doesn’t show up red in the images from Webb, but rather “really bright, because it has so much head it in,” according to Murray.
“The images, and there are several of them, show some incredible features, including the northern and southern aurora on Jupiter,” Murray said.
It also shows a “very thin hint” of Jupiter’s ring.
“I’m not sure everybody knows, but Jupiter has a ring as well,” he said. “It’s very faint and very difficult to see, but now that we have a big infrared telescope up there, it’s visible.”
