WASHINGTON (KNX) — Even before President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that he would cancel $10,000 of student loan debt for borrowers, his approval rating had risen to its highest peak yet this summer.
According to a two-day Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll completed on Tuesday, the public approval rating for Biden’s job performance was 41%, its highest level recorded by the outlets since early June. Through the online poll, responses were gathered from 1,005 adults, including 458 Democrats and 379 Republicans.
In polls conducted in May, June and July by Reuters/Ipsos, Biden’s lowest ratings were around 36%.
These lows rivaled those of former President Donald Trump, which was around 33% in December 2017. Other polls this month have shown Biden’s approval is going up, though it has been below 50% since last August, according to Reuters/Ipsos.
Inflation, the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and funding for Ukraine as it fights off a Russian invasion are factors that have impacted the nation over the past year.
In the weeks leading up to the Tuesday poll results, Democrats in Congress were able to pass legislation impacting the nation’s approach to climate change, drug prices and improve supply chains to counter production in China. Inflation has also slowed, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report.
This week, Democrat approval of Biden was up to 78%, compared to 69% in July.
Although Democrats are expected to lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections, they are expected to retain control of the Senate, per projections by Five Thirty Eight as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Things have improved for Democrats in the House – even though they are still underdogs,” the outlet, which noted that the president’s party seldom does well in the midterms, said Friday. “Following the [Supreme Court’s] decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, polls for the race for Congress have inched toward Democrats.”
With control of the House, Republicans could block pieces of Biden and the Democrats’ legislative agenda, said Reuters. Only 12% of Republicans polled this week approved of Biden, a figure that Reuters said has remained largely steady in recent weeks.
