A man was fatally injured during a confrontation with a person who hit him with a vehicle during a possible carjacking in Long Beach, and police Monday sought the public's help to find the suspect, who fled before officers arrived.

Officers were sent to Santa Fe Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway about 9:30 a.m. Sunday "regarding a carjacking call," police said.

At the scene, officers found a man with critical injuries to the upper and lower body.

"Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," police said. "The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle prior to officers' arrival."

Authorities withheld the name of the fatally injured man, who was 59, pending notification of his relatives.

"The preliminary investigation revealed the victim and suspect were involved in a dispute, that escalated when the suspect struck the victim with a vehicle," police said. "The motive and circumstances of the incident are still under investigation."

Anyone with information was urged to call Detectives Ethan Shear or Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244. Anonymous tips may be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or www.lacrimestoppers.org.
