A man found himself in an awkward situation in Antioch over the weekend, after getting stuck in a 16-inch underground pipe.
When Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to the situation Sunday evening, the man, in his 30s, had been stuck in the pipe for about two days.
"He'd gotten stuck in some debris down there and we had to get down there ourselves, clear the debris and actually free him," said Steve Hill, a Contra Costa County Fire spokesperson.
The whole rescue took about three and a half hours, according to a tweet posted by the fire department just before 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The pipe was about 15 feet below ground in the 3100 block of Buchanan Road. Help was called for after police heard someone screaming.
A multi-department response, including fire officials and police, of 50 personnel were able to free him in a "complex and risky" rescue.
"He was very glad to get out and was in fairly good condition given the circumstances," said Hill.
The man reportedly was uninjured but was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
It has not yet been disclosed how and why the man got stuck in the first place.
