SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A five-year-old boy is recovering after being attacked by a mountain lion Tuesday evening in rural San Mateo County.
Mountain lion attacks on humans are incredibly rare, but it happened last night in Half Moon Bay in the 1000 block of Tunitas Creek Rd.
"A boy was hiking with his family on the property just around sunset here in Half Moon Bay and there's a water trough that's set up there where the landowner has a camera trap and so the lion was hiding behind that water trough and the child ran ahead and startled the lion," Alice Granado with the Bay Area Puma Project said, recounting the attack to KCBS Radio.
The young boy suffered lacerations to his face, but officials confirmed that he will be ok following the incident.
"There have been very few attacks, even fewer fatal attacks," Granado said. "A lot of the attacks we hear about are on pets and livestock, but it is important to remember that a lot of these are preventable."
A mother lion and two cubs have been spotted numerous times on the property near Tunitas Creek Road.
"We don't know what’s going to happen, but we do know that this was not a case where a lion was stalking a human," Granado explained.
There has been no word from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife if they plan on trapping the lions.
