Orange Coast College renames baseball field after coach killed in Kobe Bryant helicopter crash

COSTA MESA, Calif. (KNX) - A baseball field at Orange Coast College was renamed to honor John Altobelli, the college’s baseball coach who died in the 2020 helicopter crash alongside Kobe Bryant.

On Saturday, the field was named John Altobelli Park.

During the ceremony, every player from the college wore jersey number 14, which is the number Altobelli wore, according to KTLA. The number, school officials said has been retired in Altobelli’s honor.

On Jan. 26, 2020, Altobelli, his wife Keri, and their daughter, Alyssa, were aboard the helicopter with Bryant, his daughter Gianna, when it crashed in the hills of Calabasas.
