Robert Kennedy Jr. – who recently filed for candidacy for president in 2024 as a Democrat – has a higher favorability rating than either former President Donald Trump or current President Joe Biden, per a new poll.
According to the Economist/YouGov survey, the environmental activist and lawyer had an overall favorability rating of 49% (13% very favorable and 36% somewhat favorable). While 14% of participants found him very unfavorable, 21% said they did not know what they thought of him.
Kennedy, 69, is the son of Robert F. Kennedy Sr. and the nephew of President John F. Kennedy Sr., who were both assassinated. His father was running for president when he was killed in 1968.
Although he is running as a Democrat, Kennedy has gained media attention for his criticism of COVID-19 vaccine mandates, a stance supported by more Republicans than Democrats. His wife, actress Cheryl Hines, has even apologized for his comments about vaccines. According to a report in TIME, the candidate’s campaign has been very “online” so far, including a Wednesday appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast.
“Weird is one word for Kennedy’s bid, which has won support from figures as disparate as Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, actor Alicia Silverstone, and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones,” said the outlet.
Compared to Kennedy’s 49% approval rating, former President Donald Trump, 77, – who was indicted for the second time in a matter of months last week – had just 33%. Democrat incumbent President Joe Biden, 80, had 45% and Trump’s main GOP rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, had 41%. They each had a higher “very unfavorable” rating than Kennedy: Trump was at 45%, Biden was at 41% and DeSantis was at 34%. However, Trump remains popular among conservative voters.
According to YouGov, 1,500 respondents participated in the survey from June 10 to June 13. Last month, Audacy reported that Monmouth University poll results indicated U.S. voters were more certain about who they wouldn’t vote for than who they would vote for. Around 50% said they wouldn’t vote for Biden, and the same amount said they wouldn’t vote for Trump.
While TIME likened Kennedy’s campaign to “MAGA for Democrats,” referencing Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan, The Hill reported that progressive Democrats wish that a different candidate was challenging the president’s bid for a second term.
