LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The security company responsible for serving the Netflix is a Joke comedy festival where a man tackled comedian Dave Chapelle is the same company that contracted protection services for Travis Scott's deadly 2021 Astroworld festival, according to reports.
Contemporary Services Corporation (CSC) bills itself as the "worldwide pioneer and expert" in crowd management. It provides event security services to nearly 200 venues, according to its website.
Last week, a person rushed on stage and attacked Dave Chappelle at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles Tuesday night during a Netflix comedy festival. LAPD identified the man as Isaiah Lee, 23, and said he had a knife shaped like a replica gun on him at the time. Lee has pleaded not guilty to felony assault charges.
Comedian Tehran Von Ghasri told BuzzFeed News he informed a CSC-uniformed security guard that an unknown man had made it past security blockades but said the guard was unresponsive.
"She shrugged me off. And within a minute, [Lee] had hoisted himself onstage and knocked Chappelle down," Ghasri told the outlet.
CSC employees who worked the Hollywood Bowl Netflix event have criticized what they describe as a lazy hiring effort with little training or information. Similarly, employees condemned a "super-rushed" hiring process during the 2021 Astroworld Festival that killed 10 people and injured many more.
CSC has not yet responded to requests for comment. This story will be updated if it does.
"We are reviewing our existing procedures both internally and with the assistance of outside experts so we can continue to provide a safe and secure environment at the Hollywood Bowl," the L.A. Philharmonic Association, which owns and operates the venue, said in a statement.
