With Christmas just days away, some Southern California residents are hitting the road to get to their holiday destination.

The Automobile Club of Southern California estimated 9.5 million people will be traveling for the holidays this year.

Doug Shupe with the Automobile Club of Southern California said Saturday will be the busiest day on the roads.

“There's a lot of people finish off the work week and then head out for the holiday week,” he said.

He also said to expect traffic on Wednesday Dec. 27.

“Wednesday is one of those days where a lot of people return from the Christmas destinations and then a lot of people are also heading out for New Year's destination,” he said.

Also out on the road, officers with the California Highway Patrol.

CHP will initiate its annual Christmastime "maximum enforcement period,” when officers will be on the lookout to catch drunken or drug-impaired drivers. That will begin Friday at 6 p.m.
