Thousands of people who work at SoFi Stadium are being told they’ll be banned from working the World Cup games unless they submit to a FIFA background check.
Labor union Unite Here 11 said that employees are being asked to provide private information, such as their Social Security numbers and country of birth, to FIFA and that the information is being shared potentially with Homeland Security.
Natasha Rycenberg, an attorney with the labor union, said workers are being forced to choose between their livelihoods and their right to privacy under California law.
“They've already been hired and gone through the job application background process at SoFi,” she told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener. “They're not going to become FIFA employees. What FIFA is doing with the Social Security number is their accreditation process, I mean, this is what they say in their documents, is we're going to store it in Eastern Europe, and we can share it with undisclosed third parties. We can share it with law enforcement agencies.”
The union says state law bans these types of requests unless they come from employers.
