STOCKTON, Calif. (KNX) – A 15-year-old girl was stabbed to death by an intruder at Stagg High School Monday, officials said.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m., CBS Sacramento reported. Stockton Unified School District said a trespasser got onto the campus and stabbed the student, causing the school to go into lockdown.
“The suspect is in custody and the victim has been transported to the hospital,” officials said. “The motive for the attack is under investigation.”
During a press conference, a school's superintendent confirmed the teen had died at the hospital.
The suspect has not been identified, but Deputy Chief Eric Kane with the Stockton Police Department said it is a man in his 40s.
In a news release shared by the department, officials said the man parked in the high school's front lot, walked over to the student and stabbed her.
Police said that they believe the student was targeted by the man, though at this time, it's unclear if, or how, they knew each other.
Students were dismissed from the school around 2:20 p.m., officials said.
Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln said the school district and city will work together to "identify additional measures and resources" to promote public safety and services for students."
He added that his "heart is shattered by the violence that ended the life of a young student" and shared his condolences to the girl's family and the students who were there when she was attacked.
"No child should have to experience or witness such senseless acts of violence," Lincoln said.
Anyone with information on the incident can call Stockton Police at (209) 937-8377 or the Investigations Division at (209) 937-8323.
