
A major electric carmaker is jumping into the self-driving taxi space.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on his social media platform x that the robotaxi will be unveiled on August 8.
According to reports, the robotaxi will be fully self-driving, with no steering wheel or pedals.
CBS news automotive correspondent Jeff Gilbert said Tesla will challenge two heavyweights.
"They're pushing right ahead moving from San Francisco into the big Los Angeles market," he said referring to Google's Waymo.
GM's Cruz self driving vehicles have been carrying passengers in San Francisco as well. However, Cruz has been shelved due to a safety issue involving one self driving taxi.
"A pedestrian was hit by a driver and thrown in front of the self -driving vehicle that did not know how to react, and then dragged her for a while so we don't know what's going to happen next," Gilbert explained.
