WILMINGTON (CNS) - A water main break in Wilmington today led to extensive flooding and opened a large sinkhole in a street and adjacent sidewalk, interrupting traffic and water service in the area.
The break in the 20-inch main was reported in the 500 block of North Avalon Boulevard about 3:30 a.m., according to authorities.
Utility crews were sent to the scene to handle repairs. Water was shut off to the area to allow for repair work to the damaged main. The affected portion of Avalon Boulevard was shut down for several blocks.
It was unclear when water service would be restored. Repairing the sizable sinkhole was expected to take even longer. The hole swallowed nearly two lanes of traffic at the intersection.
Water from the ruptured main cascaded down several blocks of Avalon Boulevard, swamping several businesses and creating a muddy mess along the street and sidewalk.
