The latest homeless count numbers in Los Angeles County was released on Friday, showing a 3.4% increase in homelessness in L.A. County.
Residents spoke to KNX News’ Jon Baird, coming up with various reasons why this increase has occurred. Many blame the affordability of housing.
“Well, the rents are sky high for the housing situation,” said one resident. “It's just making it worse.”
Others blame the neglect of the government.
“The problem is, something happens with the government because they don't pay attention to these people, and I see a bunch of these people and I feel bad,” said another resident.
But many are calling for action.
“We need to get them off the streets. We need to get them mental help. We need to get them off drugs,” said a resident. “They've been saying they're going to do something about it for a long time, but they can't do anything.”
Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement that federal and state funding cuts are the cause of the increase in homelessness.
