Woman arrested in Santa Ana cold case

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KNX) – A woman was arrested Tuesday for the 1996 stabbing death of her boyfriend, Santa Ana Police Department said.

On Jan. 4, 1996, Hervey died in the apartment he shared with Benning in 2200 block of N. Broadway Street. Police said Hervey had been stabbed numerous times in the upper torso.

At the time, the department said it received a call from someone saying that “a male Black suspect that had forced entry into the apartment and stabbed the victim.”

During an investigation, neighbors told investigators that a loud argument was heard inside the apartment for 15 minutes that night.

The case eventually went cold and in 2001, Benning moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and then Austin, Texas.

The department said in January 2020, it received an anonymous letter that accused Benning of the crime.

Detectives reopened the case and conducted “extensive follow-up to include forensic testing was completed, as well as consulting with forensic experts”, officials said.

Police said they collected enough evidence to get a criminal complaint and issued a $1,000,000 warrant.

Benning will be extradited to Santa Ana.
