The collision occurred April 20 near the Wood Ranch Parkway and Long Canyon Road.

The victim, who was conscious at the time of the collision, told Simi Valley officers she was reaching to fix her purse, which fell over in the passenger seat, when she drifted off the road and struck a tree.

Police have not released the victim’s name publicly out of respect for the family.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

“This is an extremely sad reminder that distracted driving is not only dangerous but also deadly,” the department said. “The Simi Valley Police Department reminds everyone to keep their eyes on the road and no matter what the distraction is, it can wait until you pull over and stop.”
