High school sports will go on in Pennsylvania this fall, but not in one area district.
Norristown Area School District announced Thursday that, in accordance with its decision to have fully-virtual learning until at least January, all fall sports – including practices and other team activities – have been suspended district-wide, and Superintendent Christopher Dormer will recommend official cancellation at the August meeting of the Board of School Directors.
The announcement comes one day after the PIAA voted 29-2 to allow fall sports to be played in Pennsylvania, albeit with no spectators, and two days after the Norristown Area district announced their reopening plans for 2020-21, which include virtual learning until at least January 11, 2021.
In their suspension statement, the district noted that, “if we cannot guarantee a safe return to the classroom, we cannot guarantee a safe return to the playing field, course, sidelines, courts, or locker rooms.”
