Somehow, some way, the Eagles had a chance to tie Sunday's game against the Ravens after Carson Wentz scored on a QB sneak to make it 30-28 Ravens with under two-minutes to go.
Philadelphia had erased a 24-6 deficit, just needing a two-point conversion to tie the game and potentially send it into overtime.
The two-point attempt play call? A read-option with Wentz and backup RB Boston Scott (Miles Sanders was out with an injury), and Wentz was stuffed, essentially ending the game.
Doug Pederson admitted on Monday's 94WIP Morning Show that he should have called a timeout.
"One of the things — and this is something most people won't understand or at least don't know — on those last two drives to score, we basically exhausted every red zone play that we had on our call sheet," Pederson told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Monday morning. "There were a couple of plays that we had to rely on our veteran guys. Like the two-point conversion before, J.J. [Arcega-Whiteside]— we put him in position on that two-point conversion, a training camp type play. And so we knew going in we were going have to use one of our game plan plays, probably in another area of the game plan for that specific call.
"And I look back at it today, I believe I still had the timeout with that situation and I think maybe the best situation, or call, could have been the timeout to really think things through. At least give us more time, from a coaching standpoint, to make a better decision at that time."
Cataldi asked if Wentz is able to call that timeout as well.
"Yeah, he could have," Pederson said. "But listen, I don't expect him — it's our job to put our players in position to be successful. Obviously the quarterback and the head coach are the two guys that can do that, but that falls on me to run down there and do that."
Despite the valiant effort missing most of their offensive line and receivers to injury, and losing Zach Ertz and Miles Sanders during the game, the Eagles are still a disappointing 1-4-1.
They'll be favorites, finally, on Thursday Night Football at home against the Giants, but could be without most of their starters on offense once again.
