Should Eagles go after Odell Beckham Jr. if released by Browns?

There is a situation bubbling in Cleveland between the Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. that could result in his release.

Jason La Canfora reports the Browns are not willing to waive the veteran WR.

On Tuesday, Beckham Jr.'s dad posted videos ripping Baker Mayfield. A report states the relationship between Beckham Jr. and Mayfield is beyond repair. Ultimately, the trade deadline came and went and Odell remained a Brown.

However, if OBJ is in fact waived, Howie Roseman has always been clear that if a player is available, the Eagles will discuss the potential of adding him.

Joe Giglio says the Eagles, who have the sixth highest waiver priority, should not claim OBJ if he is waived.

The other five NFL teams with a higher waiver priority than the Eagles are— from 1-5—the Jags, Jets, Texans, Falcons, and Bengals.

At the position as it stands now, the Eagles have some young, promising receivers in Devonta Smith, Quez Watkins and Jalen Reagor, but at this point they have all been very inconsistent. They are in need of a veteran receiver with a proven track record they can count on. They have shown they can run the ball when they need to, but they are going to have to show they can pass it better than they have, and adding a veteran receiver should help make that happen.

The question is if Beckham Jr. is that player. He hasn't topped 400 yards receiving in either of the last two seasons, and hasn't topped 1,100 yards receiving since 2016. He has had trouble staying healthy, playing in just 13 total games over the last two years, and hasn't played in 16 games since 2016. The video his dad posted, however, does show Beckham Jr. getting open and Mayfield either missing him or not throwing him the ball. So it does seem Beckham Jr. is getting open — he just isn't getting the ball.

Financially acquiring Beckham Jr. would not be cheap, but the Eagles could work around it. He has a base salary of $14.5 million this season, and the Eagles would be on the hook for about half of it. He is owed $13.75 million in both 2022 and 2023, but none of that is guaranteed. So essentially the Eagles would be taking on $7 million in salary for this season, and they would likely re-do his deal to lower his hits in future years in exchange for guaranteeing more money.

If they can re-do his deal, there isn't much risk in bringing Beckham Jr. in. It is a low risk, high reward move for a team that needs help in the passing game.

Considering how many questions comes with Beckham Jr., however, it isn't a move the Eagles should absolutely make if they have the chance.
