Dating back to their previous regime, the Bears had been looking to trade Foles for a year but found no suitors. New general manager Ryan Poles then decided to take a new approach in the quest to part ways with Foles as the organization moves forward in a full rebuild.

“Ryan Poles did the classy thing, and Nick appreciates it,” Foles’ agent Justin Schulman told the NFL Network.

The Bears acquired Foles in a trade with the Jaguars in 2020. He started seven games for Chicago that season, with the Bears going 2-5 in those contests. Foles posted an 80.8 quarterback rating in 2020, never firmly entrenching himself after grabbing the starting job in the third game of the season. He eventually lost the starting job to Mitchell Trubisky, who had originally won it in training camp.

Foles, 33, was relegated to third-string duties in 2021 after the Bears signed Andy Dalton and drafted Justin Fields. Foles appeared in one game, starting and leading Chicago to an upset win at Seattle with Dalton and Fields sidelined by injury.
