Ritchie: 'Saquon Barkley instantly makes Jalen Hurts better'

Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie reacted to the Eagles' signing of star running back Saquon Barkley during Tuesday's 94WIP Morning Show.

DeCamara was "torn" about the signing, while Ritchie—a former Eagles fullback from Mechanicsburg, PA—was fired up.

"Saquon just conducts himself in a way that everyone is a Saquon fan and man this guy is good at football," Ritchie said on Wednesday.

"He's just the most complete back out there," Ritchie continued. "It's incredible that we got a chance to bring a guy like this in...Saquon was the whopper of yesterday. Saquon is going to be incredible for our offense. Remember this guy was the second pick of the draft in 2018. He's that talented. It doesn't matter how you found your way to Saquon, you didn't end up drafting him. Incredible talent in this hemisphere in 2018."

The Eagles signed Barkley to a three-year deal worth $37.75 million and up to $46.75 million with incentives, including $26 million guaranteed. The move contradicts the team's recent philosophy of not spending at the running back position.

Barkley is the Eagles' first complete, elite three-down running back since they had LeSean McCoy in 2014.

"Saquon can do amazing things for the offense as a whole, just like a Christian McCaffrey," said Ritchie. "He's not Christian McCaffrey, but he's close...Saquon makes Jalen Hurts better instantly, as a runner and vice versa. And then as a passer, he makes Jalen better because he's a great receiver of the football, he's a constant threat in that regard. He's also a great pass protector, he understands who to pick up and how to pick them up, and he can shock you—put his helmet right up under your chin."

DeCamara was torn on the Eagles' spending big for a running back.

"I'm extremely torn. On one hand it is obviously incredibly exciting...I've seen for a decade now, the Eagles had tremendous success with cheap running backs and when they had an expensive running back they didn't go anywhere.
