Joe Giglio says the Phillies should bench Trea Turner tonight against the Baltimore Orioles.
"I don't care it is his first year here," Giglio said on Tuesday morning. "I am tired of it. He has been a bad player for the Phillies.
"The Phillies should sit him down tonight. Trea Turner needs to be sat down. It's time to let him clear his head for a day or two. Last night, hearing boos, real boos at Citizens Bank Park for the first time. And let's be real, they're not going to lose anything if he's out of the lineup. He provides nothing but speed. His defense has been poor, he doesn't hit. I want the Phillies to sit Trea Turner down tonight and not play him against the Baltimore Orioles. That's how frustrating last night was and how I think he's just in his head here, Hugh."
In Monday's series opener against Baltimore, Turner went 0-3 at the plate, committed two errors at shortstop, and was ejected in the 5th inning after arguing with the home plate umpire.
After his second error, Phillies fans booed Turner.
After the game, Turner was asked about his struggles and hearing boos at home.
Turner, in his first season as a Phillie after signing an 11-year, $300 million contract this offseason, is hitting a career low .247 through 98 games with just 10 home runs and 34 RBIs. Turner's .300 on-base percentage is also a career low and his .387 slugging percentage is his lowest mark since his rookie season, which consisted of just 44 plate appearances.
Turner has a -1.1 win probability added for an offensive player. He's never finished a season with a negative WPA.
