When Bob Myers saw Andrew Wiggins throw down his thunderous dunk on Luka Doncic Sunday night, he couldn’t help but spring out of his chair in excitement. He also shared a moment with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was sitting a few seats down from him near the court.
The Warriors president of basketball operations/general manager joined 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” Tuesday to talk about Wiggins’ dunk and reflect on the trade that brought him to Golden State in 2020. Myers also discussed his team’s chance to sweep the Mavericks in Tuesday night’s Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. Check out the full interview below, with the Wiggins chatter starting at the 6:45 mark:
Myers was in attendance at the 2000 Slam Dunk contest at Oakland Arena, about five rows back from the free throw line, when Vince Carter threw down an iconic 360 windmill dunk. Myers said he had the same reaction to Wiggins’ slam on Sunday.
“My body just shot up,” Myers told hosts Bonta Hill and Joe Shasky. “I was sitting on the floor with (Warriors owner) Joe (Lacob) and I jumped. You couldn’t not. I kinda had this visceral reaction, like, ‘Oh my god.’ You play basketball, those are the plays everybody wishes they could do. The 3-point shot is great, but dunking on somebody and getting that high – we all dream of doing that.”
Mahomes was wowed by the dunk, too.
“He looked at me and he goes, ‘That’s an athlete right there,’” Myers said.
Mahomes was also spotted talking with Cowboys star Micah Parsons during the game.
Mahomes is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s top athletes, as the 26-year-old dual threat quarterback already has four Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl on his resume. Mahomes, of course, led the Chiefs to a comeback win over the 49ers in Super Bowl 54.
Myers said they briefly talked about his basketball background, too.
“He loves hoops. He played,” Myers said. “He told me he was a two guard. He shoulda played point, but he said he got moved to the two guard.”
Mahomes definitely makes sense as a point guard, right? I bet he was throwing also sorts of crazy sidearm dimes to his teammates in tight windows on the basketball court. Safe to say he picked the right sport, though.
