Back in 2015, Steph Curry broke Chris Paul’s ankles with a wild crossover near the baseline that’s still replayed to this day. Back in 2018, Paul shot coach Steve Kerr a fake laugh in a clip that has gone viral over the years. Just last season, Curry was talking trash to CP3 and telling him “This ain’t 2014 no more,” alluding to the last time Paul beat the Warriors in the playoffs.
There’s admittedly going to be an adjustment period for everyone involved, but it sounds like the Dubs are having fun with it.
Paul joined the “Sloane Knows” podcast with 15-year-old host Sloane Weinstein for a wide-ranging chat that included some questions about his offseason trade to the Warriors. Paul said he wouldn’t have believed a time traveler who told him he’d be wearing a Golden State jersey one day.
“Hell naw. Excuse my language, ain’t no way, there is no way,” Paul said. “It’s so fun and kinda cool that it ain’t like a pink elephant in the room or whatever. I remember me and Steph worked out in Vegas and a few of the coaches walked in and they saw me in Warriors gear and they was like, ‘This is crazy. Who woulda thought?’
“So, the fact that we can all talk about it and it’s not like it’s some secret – like, ‘Don’t say this or don’t say that.’ It’s really cool. Because it’s like that with my family, with everybody who’s been supporting me for all these years. It shows you the power of sports and what can be. I’m excited to see what we do.”
That kind of easy-going attitude trickles down from coach Steve Kerr, who has also laughed off his viral moment with Paul from a few years ago.
It’s not just coaches and teammates who will have to adjust, but the fanbase, as Paul has often been public enemy No. 1 for Dub Nation.
“Being at Chase Center and being on the good side of them going on all those runs and making all them threes – it’s gonna be very interesting,” Paul said. “It’s gonna be an adjustment not only for me, but all the fans too. I can’t wait.”
As Steph acknowledged earlier this week, Paul’s playing time will be something the Warriors will have to figure out as a group, but CP3 said he’s looking forward to playing with three future Hall of Famers like Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
“Playing with guys who are so cerebral,” Paul said. “They’re so smart in the way that they move and the way that they know each other. Just trying to blend into that.”
