The Bay is big enough for the both of ‘em.
Brandon Belt’s alter ego of 'The Captain' has taken on a life of its own since he debuted it with an electrical tape captain ‘C’ at Wrigley Field last year. Klay Thompson endeared himself to Dub Nation with frequent Instagram live broadcasts from his boat, which he calls 'The Nordic Knife' or 'Splash Express' depending who’s on board. Klay’s gone so far to call himself 'Sea Captain'.
Over the past couple of weeks, the Giants and Warriors fan favorites have relayed messages to each other through the media.
Following Monday night’s impressive 126-106 win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 2 of the first round, Thompson appeared with NBC Sports Bay Area and gave a shoutout to Belt.
“I give Brandon a lot of respect,” Thompson said. “He’s a World Series champion. We can co-captain together.”
If you think about it, Klay and Belt have a lot in common. They both debuted in 2011 and they’ve both won multiple championships (Klay has three and Belt has two). They’ve both spent their entire careers in the Bay Area, and now they’re neighbors in San Francisco.
Klay must have heard Belt’s quip in the locker room after Opening Day. That afternoon at McCovey Cove, Belt rode atop a towed boat to make an epic entrance into the stadium before he hit a dinger.
Asked about Klay sporting his Giants-themed Captain’s hat on the Bay, Belt told reporters after the game, “Each sport can have their own captain. That’s totally fine. I just happen to be the captain of baseball.”
Klay has been spotted at Giants games before. Maybe once the Warriors’ playoff run is over, Thompson can host Belt on his boat. That’d be a prime Bay Area sports moment right there.
Klay, for one, thinks Belt looks like he already owns a boat.
“He looks like he would,” Thompson said. “I think he’s from the South, too. He looks like he’d be resourceful.”
