Taking stock of the roster heading into the 2023-24 season, Steph Curry likes what he sees.
Curry recently spoke to reporters at the American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe and was asked about the Warriors’ offseason moves and how they fit into the landscape of the Western Conference.
Out the door are players like Jordan Poole, Donte DiVincenzo, JaMychal Green, Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins. The Warriors didn’t clean house this offseason, but acquiring Chris Paul and veterans like Dario Šarić and Cory Joseph clearly changed the dynamics of the team.
“For us, it was about trying to make the pieces fit a little bit better to give us more versatility on both sides of the ball,” Curry said. “We understand our core is back. Adding CP and some other vets who can help us fill out rotation and increase our depth. We’ve got two young guys in their third year – Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody – who have huge opportunities to take another step in their careers. That’s what we are. Our team makes a lot more sense this year.”
Poole didn’t progress as hoped in Year 4 of his career, while DiVincenzo was up-and-down and Green never really fit in with Steve Kerr’s flowing offense or got his outside shot going. The Warriors are banking on Paul to bring more stability to the second unit, while Šarić’s stretch abilities as a big man could fit in well with Golden State’s scheme. Joseph provides the team with a solid third point guard, as we can expect the 38-year-old Paul to be limited by load management next season.
While Curry obviously would have loved to be playing in the Finals this summer, he has made the most of his extra offseason to sharpen his golf game. After Day 1 of the action, Curry is currently atop the leaderboard.
A reporter asked Curry if he’s noticed that he tends to have more NBA success following a good outing at the American Century.
“I like that cycle,” Curry said. “Don’t win a championship in the league, play well here and go back and win another championship out there on the court. Hopefully I can manifest that for the next 11 months. That’d be awesome.”
