Steve Kerr says Spurs win ranks among top three victories of season

Steve Kerr sounded like he was still buzzing off Tuesday night’s win in San Antonio on Wednesday evening. The Warriors coach joined 95.7 The Game’s “Damon & Ratto” for his weekly appearance and said the short-handed 124-120 win over the Spurs ranked among the top three wins of the season so far. You can listen to the full interview below:

“I think we’ve had three wins this year that have jumped out to me,” Kerr told hosts Damon Bruce and Ray Ratto. “One was Christmas Day in Phoenix, beating the Suns there. Another was Salt Lake a week later against the Jazz. This one was most exciting and wildest and the most improbable. There’s a few games that sound out each year, each season. This was one that will stand out for the whole year, just because it was so improbable and so wild. It was so entertaining but also so productive for so many of our young players. Just a feel-good win, all the way around.”

While the wins over the Suns and Jazz were road victories that made the Warriors look mighty against Western Conference juggernauts, the Spurs are 19-33. But Golden State were without seven key contributors – Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, Otto Porter Jr., Andre Iguodala and Nemanja Bjelica – and still pulled off the win.

Kerr conceded that the game changed once Spurs big man Jakob Poeltl exited with a head injury in the second quarter after he took an elbow from Warriors rookie Jonathan Kuminga. The small-ball style of play suits the Warriors, especially right now when they’re so thin in the frontcourt.

Kerr said he also got a kick out of seeing Curry being so animated throughout Tuesday’s victory.

“Watching Steph on the bench last night was such a great reminder of why he’s an incredible face of the franchise, franchise cornerstone, whatever you wanna call him,” Kerr said. “When one of the best players in the history of the game is gleefully running around the court in joy of his young teammates, it just sets an incredible tone for the whole group.”

The Warriors have now won seven in a row after going through a team-wide offensive funk through most of January.

“There’s just going to be ups and downs,” Kerr said. “I think we’re past that spell and we’re in a good groove.”
