DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Aldon Smith experiment in Seattle is already over before the Seahawks could even play their first preseason game.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the Seahawks are releasing the former San Francisco 49er Wednesday. The defensive end signed with the team as a free agent this offseason after the Dallas Cowboys elected to not bring him back after his one-year stint with the organization in 2020.

Smith, 31, made his triumphant return to the NFL last season after missing four years due to a series of off-field issues. He started all 16 games for the Cowboys and had five sacks.

Smith was involved in another off-the-field incident this offseason, as he was charged with second-degree battery following an alleged assault in Louisiana.

Smith was an All-Pro in 2012 with the 49ers, finishing with 66 total tackles, 19.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and 29 quarterback hits.
