49ers announce two low-profile wide receiver signings

The 49ers announced a pair of low-profile wide receiver signings on Monday – former Tennessee Titans wideout Marcus Johnson and former Dallas Cowboys receiver Malik Turner.

Johnson, 27, is listed at 6-foot-1, 207 pounds. He caught nine passes for 160 yards last season, his best game coming in Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints, when he caught five balls for 100 yards.

Turner, 26, is listed at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and spent last season as the No. 5/No. 6 receiver with the Cowboys. He caught 12 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns while appearing in 14 games last season. Turner lined up nearly twice as many times on special teams last season (238 snaps) compared to offense (134).

Michael Gelhken of the Dallas Morning News shared details about Turner’s low-risk contract.

These signings are on par for the 49ers, who seem to be handcuffed by Jimmy Garoppolo’s $26.9 million salary next season as he recovers from March shoulder surgery. Much of their low-profile signings this offseason have been focused on special teams contributors, while the splashiest signing has been cornerback Charvarius Ward.

Star 49ers wideout Deebo Samuel appears to be upset with the team, as he is eligible for a big extension this season and has seen other wide receivers like Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, Amari Cooper and Stefon Diggs each get deals worth at least $96 million this offseason.
