SANTA CLARA — It’s hard to miss No. 97 when he’s back on the practice field.
Nick Bosa made his first appearance with his teammates on Thursday since agreeing to a five-year, $170 million extension, as he did individual side work during the media-viewing portion of the session.
By Wednesday’s 1 p.m. PT practice start time, the 49ers had yet to officially announce the extension, but he was wearing pads and practice pants while going through his work. As his mom, Cheryl, told 95.7 The Game on Wednesday evening, Bosa looks to be in great shape as he returns from his six-week holdout.
Bosa landed in the Bay Area late Wednesday night and told fans, “sorry for the scare” as he stepped off the plane. Though the extension has yet to be announced, Bosa is about to play out the final year of his rookie deal at $18.9 million, so he is already under contract for 2023.
The average annual value will be $34 million on Bosa’s next contract. That’s $2 million per game or $1 million per half in the regular season. Not a bad gameday check.
Reporters were allowed to view the first four periods of practice, but we didn’t get to see Bosa have any contract drills with teammates. One thing’s for sure, the Niners are happy that he’s back in the building before the season opener at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Bosa didn't speak to reporters on Thursday afternoon, but defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said the edge rusher didn't participate in any team portions of the practice.
